The AmeriCorps Learning Community is a four month training series offered by Volunteer West Virginia. AmeriCorps members are required to attend at least 2 workshops in the webinar series but you may attend as many workshops as you are interested in. Below is a list of workshops included in the series. Please register for at least 2 of the workshops. If the workshop includes a “Get Credit” button you must also complete that form to receive credit for meeting your AmeriCorps Learning Community requirement.

Summit on Race Matters in West Virginia: Education & Employment
November 5 from 4-6:30 PM

The 2020 Summit on Race Matters in West Virginia will be a monthly gathering of citizens from the public, private, and philanthropic sectors to discuss race in a comprehensive, collaborative, and compassionate manner, designed to build the Beloved Community in West Virginia. The topic of the November session is Education & Employment. The workshop will feature a keynote address by Michael Eric Dyson. Communication: What to Say and When to Say it
November 12 & 17 from 12:30-1:30pm

November 12, 12:30-1:30pm: 30 Minute Promotional Strategy
Website, email, social media, press outreach, flyers, brochures… With so many avenues to get your message out into the world, how do you choose what will work best? And how do you pull together different avenues into 1 cohesive campaign to promote your work? Learn a method to build out a strategy to grow visibility for your work in 30 minutes or less.

November 17, 12:30-1:30pm: Communicate like a Professional
Serving in a new environment with new colleagues, supervisors, and goals can be a daunting task. As an AmeriCorps member, there are nuances to navigating professional relationships at your service site, and developing these skills will not only make your service year more enjoyable, but will carry you forward through the rest of your professional life. Join this session to learn tips on interpersonal communication skills such as ‘managing up’, conflict resolution, and more.

Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis.

  • Part 1: Participants will complete approx. 2 hours of independent study at their leisure prior to the 2nd session which will occur as a group webinar. Materials will be emailed after registration is received.
  • Part 2: Participants will receive approx. 4.5 hours (half day) of direct instructional training from certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor via webinar-style meeting. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Mental Health First Aid Certification.
